News
February 2011 Newsletterish from Avi
It’s been a long and twisted road for the Avi Buffalo band over this past year, but now about 3 months into our huge break for school, writing/recording and personal health we’re looking forward to winding things up again in the summer with more touring and new music. Currently I’m living in our tour van with all my recording gear, instruments and lots of blankets, in the Zahner-Isenberg driveway with a big orange extension cord into one of the side windows. During the week Sheridan and I attend Long Beach City College. I’m taking two classes, Music 94(Beginning Recording Techniques) and Music 33B(Intercultural Music from Latin America), and the rest of the days are spent writing songs for a second Avi Buffalo record, eating, and trying to make lasting relationships. We hope to have something of a “single” ready and out by the summer, most likely featuring something from the next record.
Writing is going differently than it has in the past, at least I think it is. It’s really been a long time since I’ve written many complete songs, probably 2 years, so I guess it makes sense for the tunes to be different feeling than the ones written when i was between the ages 15 and 18. This makes me very excited because I hadn’t felt a sense of freshness playing all those old songs on our extensive tours and now everything feels a lot more current. As opposed to our first record which was more of a compilation of songs from different times, this next one should come off as more cohesive or refined as an actual album. I’m also trying to record a large portion of it myself at home, which so far has achieved the desired effect of sounding more organic and comfortable like my earliest recordings which were done with a computer microphone into Garageband. It’s a little more evolved now, with an Mbox, condenser mics and Logic Studio, but still the same idea.
There’s also been lots of work on side projects because of all this free time. One terrific experience Sheridan and I had was getting to record our friend Jed Davis’ songs for a group he calls Sevendys. We recorded the first 4 tunes at Sugarhill in Houston, Texas in December with bass legend Chuck Rainey(Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, etc.) and we’re recording more tunes in Los Angeles late February at East West Sound, again with Mr. Rainey. The basic drums, piano, bass and guitar tracks were done to 2-inch tape, then overdubbed in Protools in Houston, though i’m not sure if it’ll be the same in LA. You can listen to/download this music and buy a t-shirt at http://music.sevendys.com/
Another couple projects I’ve been working on, one is called Michael’s House, which is basically just me and whoever else is around recording mostly experimental music in the van. This project has a bandcamp site as well called www.michaelshouse.bandcamp.com where you can download the music I’ve been making. There are about 3 and a half albums recorded, the first one self-titled “Michael’s House”, then “Stick to your Egg Nog” and “Wudup”. More stuff in the works! And then there’s Ophiucus, which is yet to be released, it’s an album of music made by me and my good friend and beautiful artist Eydie McConnell. We’ve got a ways to go, but the music’s shaping up nicely and I can’t wait to share it with the world.
Come check out Sevendys Live at Dipiazzas in Long Beach on February 23rd with Light Music, Yeller and The Wildbunch(which I’ll also be playing guitar in). It’s going to be a great show.

Bummer Boston…
hey, some bummer news, because of the blizzard on the east coast we’re having to cancel our set in boston at the paradise club. Rogue Wave will still be playing with a local opener.
Really sorry to everyone who wanted to see us there! but the 2nd we’re at music hall of williamsburg in new york, and the next day at bowery ballroom. they’ll be spectacular shows. in the mean…time, i just recorded a 30 second whatever on this tape machine, and here it is!
touring in 6 hours.
hello, it is avi, and i still haven’t slept. i’m backtracked on sleep, because i’ve been so stoked on tour. this is bad, because sleep is very important for tour. there’s still hope for sleeping on tour. we’re leaving for tour at 10 oclock or 11 oclock, starting our drive to boston, taking the 10 freeway, which should be less snow than the 40 route, which we anticipated woud be snowless but is in fact not. we picked up the glorious van today, it’s awesome, beige, and runs real good. loaded it all up with our gear and we’re ready to embark on a 2 month journey across the united states and through ourselves and our musicianship. it’s gonna be so nuts. i’ve got blisters on my fingers! i’ve got this macbook on which i will hopefully update consistently, and i’m bringing a tascam 4 track with me, which is ridiculous but i think will be fun and i’d regret it if i didn’t at this point. listening to augustus pablo’s king tubby meets rockers uptown thanks to my new friend andy from seattle. it’s great! some real groovin’ stuff. melt-banana is driving me nuts these days, and i want to suck it’s juices into me. i’m very confused about life! touring is scary! we’re gonna be couchsurfing with our guitars for 2 months! sounds like fun, also whacky.
ALBUM IS OUT APRIL 27TH! GOING ON TOUR FOR A REALLY LONG TIME! BUT FIRST SOME LA SHOWS
Hello! It’s Avi from Avi Buffalo.
So our album is coming out April 27th, 2010 on Sub Pop Records. It’s called “Avi Buffalo” because we figured it would be a good name for our debut record. Kind of like a “meet Avi Buffalo” thing. The next ones will have more creative titles. Album art is by our good friend Devin O’Brien and also artwork by Rebecca Coleman (she’s in the band!)
We’re also going on tour for our first actual long time - Rogue Wave in early March, then Japandroids in April after SXSW.
We’re gonna have a release show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles for the record on May 1st, 2010. It should be loads of fun, and you’ll be able to buy our vinyl, cd, etc. We’re not totally confirmed on who’s playing with us at that show but it will be announced as soon as possible.

Before then, and before we hit the road, we’re playing two shows in the Los Angeles area. February 17th in Pomona at the Glass House with Best Coast and Cold Cave, and February 18th at Spaceland with Lou Barlow w/ The Missingmen and Imaad Wasif. These should be very good thanks to the awesome bands we’re playing with on both those nights. We’re pretty nervous about the Lou Barlow thing, but it’s all gonna be fantastic.
I’ll keep posting bullshit on our Facebook page in efforts to raise our “post quality” meter. We went up two points yesterday, and today we’re down three. It’s like a rollercoaster.
Love and see you all soon in Middle-America,
Avi
Hey you guys!
Hi, it’s the Avinator right here with the blogger and I just hooked up a big box of music to the computer, so i’ve got lots of tracks to sift through. It’s nice to be home(though we weren’t gone for very long) and i’m snappin back into the guts with some music writing and recording. i’ve gotta dig out the nuggets and make bricks that we can be very stoked on. Our camel is thirsty! Thanks Jed Davis for helping us out on the east coast, it was wonderful to find out who you are, and that you are an awesome new friend. Also big thanks to Jesse Rifkin and Matt Kaplan for letting us crash double times. We are forever grateful!
Check out these guys:

Swingers, open til 3 AM!!!

Album Update+Pehrspace Show December 5th w/ Foot Foot
Hey! So it’s been a while since we went up to Aaron Embry’s studio, but we went back on Thursday to record the last 2 songs of the record(plus one extra!). We were supposed to go back yesterday but I picked up the local cold and had to stay home. Rescheduled for Monday! Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving will be vocal overdub time. I’m really stoked, out of the three songs we recorded on Thursday, only one of them had been planned on being recorded for a while, and the other two just sort of popped in. We think it will add quite a bit to the whole thing. This has been a crazy year, we started recording around this time in 2008, and took a few very large breaks, but it’s nice to have the old and new both so prominent in the record, because the new stuff is different and exciting, and has more nuts chord changes, which means sophistication. I took two Mucinex DM and a Claritin, STRAIGHT TRIPPIN! Good time to work on album art, which I’m supposed to turn in as soon as possible.
We’re playing one of our favorite venues, Pehrspace in December on the 5th! It’s all ages, 5 bucks, and with the wonderful Foot Foot. Very excited, Pehrspace is a wonderful place. Nice and Small, nice people, etc.
Good music stuff:
Alice Coltrane – Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana
Fred Frith – Guitar Solos
Dam-Funk – Toeachizown
Ariel Pink – Worn Copy
Santa Cruz Thursday
Hay, we’re going to Santa Cruz on Thursday! We’re playing back home in Long Beach at Visions Art Fest at Millikan High School(FREE) on Friday. We’re going to Visalia on Saturday! On Thursday the 19th we’ll be playing at the Prospector(21+) in Long Beach, and on December 5th we’re playing with Foot Foot at one of our favorite places to play, Pehrspace(All Ages) in Los Angeles. And, good news, I just got one of these:

it’s crazy!
hay
so the good news is as you may have already heard, our upcoming record will be coming out on subpop spring of 2010! very exciting for us, and we’ll have a 7 inch they’re also putting out for us at our show on November 5th! It has the songs “What’s in it for” and “Jessica” on it, both recorded at Hunter’s Hollow Recording Studio with Aaron Embry who will also be playing that night! i did the artwork for it. it looks totally crazy! Also Fort Wife gig this week at Caseys Bar and Grill in Downtown LA this Thursday, and don’t miss Boris Smile and Korey Dane in Long Beach on October 30th at Open Books on 4th and Junipero.

hey ya’ll!
Howdy, it’s Avi, just finished practicing with Fort Wife, we’re playing a couple times this week: tomorrow night at the Gypsy Lounge in Lake Forrest and Friday at Echo Curio in Los Angeles! Exciting things are happening at here at the basecamp, you’ll find out about soon enough! We finished soundproofing our practice space, and now we’re putting posters up everywhere. Still very excited about the Avi Buffalo Echo show on November 5th, and will be until the day after, which will be November 6th, on which night I will be playing the first show in about a year with So-Cal folk-troupe Boris Smile at Open books in Long Beach. Hooray! Here is a song by Jim O’Rourke called Ghost Ship in a Storm from the Eureka album. If you haven’t heard his new record The Visitor out on Drag City you should, it’s really great!
ghost ship in a storm!

Album Update
Hey ya’ll. It’s Avi. I want to fill you guys in about the record.
I am finishing up some overdubs here at my house with a Macbook Pro Tools and SM58/57.
Mixes are being rounded off.
Sorry there have been so many delays.

The nicest review we will ever have
I only learned Avi Buffalo was on the Robert Francis residency at The Echo earlier in the day and any plans I had were off. This was not to be missed.
I’m beginning to feel a bit pummeled by all the incredible shows I’ve attended over the last five days and this only added to the list. This was the third time I’ve seen Avi Buffalo, only my second with his full band.
As his set was scheduled for 9 o’clock, I walked into the nearly empty club beforehand and wasn’t completely surprised to see Aaron Embry, since I’d heard they were recording together. Not only happy to congratulate the new father in person, I was doubly pleased to hear he was playing guitar with Avi Buffalo.
There’s a gathering buzz around this remarkable band of extraordinary youth and an interesting crowd of music fanatics assembled. This included Rob Danson of Death To Anders, Ashley Jex of Rock Insider, Mary Chartkoff of The Monolators and Ben (‘Mouse’) of Classical Geek Theatre among others.
Avi Buffalo composes some of the most original, quirky, inventive and intelligent songs I’ve heard in the entire indie rock movement. Oh, hell, let’s just call the songs brilliant! No wonder he’s collaborating with Aaron Embry and Amnion. The more I hear what this band wants to say, the more I want to hear it.
It’s great to find an 18 year old writing with apparent prescience about life’s weightier topics like life and death, and in such a clear headed voice. His writing possesses a certainty I find reassuring. Just listen to the lyrics for “Where’s Your Dirty Mind”.
Performing as a band of six, their sound overwhelmed me. Much as I enjoyed them before, I wasn’t ready for this. Avi Buffalo and Rebecca Coleman handle most of the vocals. He has an appealing high voice and a slightly peculiar delivery as the words just tumble out while he plays some of the most accomplished guitar I’ve ever heard. She adds strong harmony and vocal support while mastering the keyboard.
Aron Fazio adds amazing bass and bounces around the stage in a fit of joy that’s catching. He also adds vocal harmony and when Aaron joined in, the vocals became an overwhelming wall of voices. The extraordinary drumming is by Evan Trine and there was another player in the back on another keyboard, I believe.
Besides “Where’s Your Dirty Mind”, they played a great song called “What’s In It For” and “Sun”, I believe. Not only are the lyrics fresh and original, the music sometimes achieves such great beauty, it becomes unbearably moving. And yet it rocks so hard, you just want to dance. Incredible! The whole audience seemed awe-struck.
I stayed to speak to them afterward and was glad to hear Avi’s CD is almost done. I am most anxious to have some recorded material. The whole band is refreshingly pretension-free. I would love to have stayed to see Robert Francis for the third time in three weeks, but there’s a lot of shows coming up, so I sacrificed.
But I came away from the show feeling I have been lucky to have seen some amazing bands in my life…and this may be one of the most amazing. It will be fun to watch Avi Buffalo progress over the next year.
All this on the eve of the inauguration of President Obama. It’s becoming difficult not to be optimistic about the future.
